A Night I Will Never Forget at Song-Kol

My name is Lukas, and I’m from Germany. I’ve always loved the mountains, but I had never experienced anything quite like Song-Kol.

The drive seemed endless. We climbed winding mountain roads, passed green valleys and watched herds of horses grazing in the distance. When the lake finally appeared, I asked our driver to stop. The water looked silver beneath the clouds, and a few white yurts stood alone on the shore.

Our hosts welcomed us with hot tea and freshly baked bread. I spent the afternoon walking beside the lake and taking photographs. In the evening, we had dinner together inside a warm yurt. I tried to learn a few words of Kyrgyz, and everyone laughed kindly at my pronunciation.

After dinner, I stepped outside. It was cold, but I completely forgot about the temperature when I looked up. I had never seen so many stars. There were no streetlights, no cars and no city noise—only the lake, the mountains and the night sky.

The next morning, I woke to the sound of horses near our yurt. I took my cup of tea outside and watched the first sunlight reach the mountains.

I came to Kyrgyzstan looking for an adventure. That morning, I realized that one of the most memorable parts of my journey was simply sitting beside a lake, doing nothing at all.
