Your itinerary

Day 1

Dushanbe – Kulob – Kalai Khum

In the morning we will begin our journey to the Pamir Mountains. Today we will drive to Kalai Khum via Kulob city. The road to Kalai Khum offers travelers a scenic journey through beautiful landscapes. On the way you will see the Norak reservoir, formed by the Norak dam on the Vakhsh River. The reservoir is surrounded by stunning mountain views and provides insight into Tajikistan’s hydropower infrastructure. The highest point of the day is Shurobod pass (2267 m). Continuing on from Shurobod, as you head towards Kalai Khum, you’ll follow the Panj River, which forms the natural border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan. The river valley offers breathtaking views of the rugged Pamir Mountains and the terraced fields cultivated by local farmers. For centuries, the Pamirs have inspired the world’s greatest explorers – Marco Polo, Xuan Zang and Mirza Muhammad Haidar. Having visited the Pamirs, many travelers called this giant mountain system the ocean of blue and white mountains.
Driving Distance/Time: 370 km / 7-8 hours
Accommodation: Comfortable local homestay with western-style toilets (shared)
Altitude: 1,200m

The Panj River valley is characterized by rugged cliffs, terraced fields, and traditional villages, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of the local communities. This route is part of the iconic Pamir Highway, a high-altitude road that traverses the Pamir Mountains. Once you reach Rushan, you will take a side trip to the Bartang Valley – one of the wildest and most evocative valleys in the Western Pamirs. Even the Pamiri themselves consider the Bartang valley as the maybe most prototypical region of their homeland. You will drive to the junction with Jizev side valley and hike up for about 2-3 hours to Jizev village. Today you will spend the night in a real Pamir traditional house and get acquainted with the mountain life of the locals.

Jizev – Khorog

In the morning, we hike back down from Jizev village, retracing the scenic trail through the Bartang Valley before rejoining our vehicle. From here, we continue the drive toward Khorog, enjoying impressive views across the Panj River into Afghanistan. Nestled at the confluence of three rivers – where the Shokhdara and Gund Rivers meet the Panj River – Khorog is one of the smallest and most remote regional capitals in the world. Completely surrounded by rugged mountains, the town has a unique atmosphere shaped by its high-altitude setting and diverse cultural heritage. In the afternoon, you will have free time to explore Khorog at your own pace – stroll through the town, visit local markets, relax by the riverside, or simply enjoy the calm atmosphere of this remote mountain city.
Driving Distance/Time: 100 km / 3-4 hours
Hiking Distance: 5 km / 1.5-2 hours
Accommodation: Comfortable local homestay with western-style toilets (shared)
Altitude: 2,200m
Day 4

Khorog – Ishkashim – Langar

We continue our adventure towards the Wakhan valley. Wakhan, known as it, served as a buffer zone between the Russian and British empires in the 19th century. Located in the heart of Asia, Pamir is a corner of skyscrapers, snow-capped majestic mountains, clear blue waters of lakes and rivers, wide valleys and dry deserts. For hundreds of years, people have referred to these highest mountains in the world as the “Roof of the World”. Today you will understand why. On the way, we will stop at the Kah-Kakha fortress dating back to the 3rd century. Here you will have a stunning view of the Afghan side of the Wakhan. Continuing towards Wakhan, we will have a detour uphill to visit the Yamchun fortresses and further down the hillside is the Bibi Fatima hot spring. In Yamg village, we will visit the reconstructed house of the Sufi mystic Mubarak Kadam, who died in 1910. Nearby stands a stone pillar with a hole, once used by him to calculate the solar calendar – a fascinating insight into early scientific knowledge in the region. Our final stop of the day is Vrang village, home to a remarkable Buddhist complex dating from the 4th–7th centuries, evidence of the ancient Silk Road cultures that once flourished here. By evening, we arrive in Zong, one of the easternmost villages of the Wakhan Valley, where we settle into a local homestay and enjoy traditional Pamiri hospitality..
Driving Distance/Time: 260 km / 7-8 hours
Accommodation: Comfortable local homestay with western-style toilets (shared)
Altitude: 2,900m
Day 5

Langar – Bulunkul

After breakfast, we continue our journey through the remote and scenic Khargush Valley, one of the most striking landscapes of the Eastern Pamirs. The road gradually ascends to the high Khargush Pass (4,344 m), offering wide-open views of alpine plateaus and rugged mountain terrain. After crossing the pass, we descend into the Murghab region, home to two of the Pamirs’ most beautiful high-altitude lakes – Yashilkul and Bulunkul, both located at approximately 3,700 meters above sea level. In the afternoon, you will have free time to experience local village life and take a leisurely walk around the lakes, enjoying the silence and raw beauty of the Eastern Pamirs. Overnight is in a simple local homestay, offering an authentic glimpse into life in one of the highest and coldest inhabited areas of Central Asia.

Day 6

Bulunkul – Murgab (with side trips to Shakhty Cave & Shorbulak Observatory)

After breakfast, we depart Bulunkul and continue our journey across the wide, windswept landscapes of the Eastern Pamirs. Today’s drive leads through vast high-altitude plains and rolling hills, where the sense of space and isolation is truly striking. Along the way, we make a side trip to Shakhty Cave, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Pamirs. This shallow cave is famous for its prehistoric rock paintings, depicting hunting scenes and animals, and offers a rare glimpse into the lives of ancient inhabitants of this harsh region. We also visit the remains of the Shorbulak Observatory, a Soviet-era scientific station once used for high-altitude astronomical and atmospheric research. Located on an open plateau, the site offers expansive views and highlights the strategic scientific importance of the Pamirs during the Soviet period. In the afternoon, we continue to Murgab, the highest town in Tajikistan and the main settlement of the Eastern Pamirs. Upon arrival, free time is provided to explore Murgab and its local bazaar independently. Overnight is in a guesthouse.

Day 7

Murgab – Karakul Lake – Tolparkul Lake

After breakfast, we depart Murgab and drive toward Karakul Lake, crossing the spectacular Ak-Baital Pass (4,655 m) – the highest point of the Pamir Highway. We stop at Karakul Lake to admire its dramatic setting, surrounded by stark mountain ranges and vast open spaces. Continuing north, we head toward the Tajik–Kyrgyz border and cross into Kyrgyzstan. After border formalities, the journey leads through remote mountain gorges into the Chong Alai Range, one of the most impressive and least-visited regions of the country. We make our way to Tolparkul Lake (3,500 m), a beautiful alpine lake located at the foot of Lenin Peak (7,134 m). Upon arrival at Tolparkul Lake, you will have free time to explore the lakeside on your own, take short hikes, enjoy the mountain scenery, or simply relax in the peaceful surroundings. One of the highlights of today’s journey is crossing the Taldyk Pass (3,615 m), a high-altitude pass that perfectly showcases the rugged beauty of the Tien Shan and Alai mountain systems.
