The Long Road to Kel-Suu Was Worth Every Minute

My name is Daniel, and I’m from the United States. I came to Kyrgyzstan because I wanted to see places that felt far away from my everyday life. Kel-Suu Lake was exactly that kind of place.

We spent hours traveling through Kok-Kiya Valley. I kept checking the view through the window: mountains, wide open spaces and a road that seemed to disappear into the distance. Eventually, we left our vehicle and continued toward the lake on foot.

I’m not going to pretend the walk was effortless. The air felt thin, I had to stop several times to catch my breath, and I started wondering whether the lake could possibly be worth such a long journey.

Then we reached the water.

Kel-Suu lay between enormous cliffs, quiet and almost hidden from the rest of the world. I sat on a rock and looked across the lake. Nobody in our group spoke for a while. We were all too busy taking in the view.

On the way back, my legs were tired, but I couldn’t stop smiling. I had traveled a long way to see a beautiful lake, yet the road, the mountain air and the effort of reaching it had become part of the experience.

That evening, when I finally sat down for a hot meal, I felt the kind of happiness that only comes after a long day outdoors.
